I have tried many different things... uninstalled - reinstalled, messed with settings... can't figure out what else I can do... anyone have any thoughts? please help... it's a free wireless connection in my apt complex. Thank you in advance.

Your internet might be down. That happens sometimes to internets. You just have to wait a couple hours or the next day. There's nothing you can do about it. Chances are, people around you might have their internet down too. So you have to wait.

Make sure obtain ip automatically is set in your tcp/ip and wireless settings.. after that go to command prompt and type ipconfig -release, hit enter
ipconfig -renew, hit enter
Make sure you have right security protocol set in your wireless connectoin properties, gotta find that out through the apt complex

Try rebooting your modem and router. Shut down PC, unplug both the modem and router. Plug the modem in first, wait about 30 seconds and then plug in the router. After that is done, start PC back up and you should be in business.
If this internet is provided by your community, I would give them a call.

try clicking start, going to all programs, accessories, command prompt.
in that black box, type netsh winsock reset catalog
press enter.
reboot.
see if that worked... if not you may have to get your building IT department (if you live in a college dorm?) to take a look.
also, if you are taking the wireless connection from a neighbour and it's not actually provided by the building, do not connect to it. I don't want you to get in legal trouble.
