If there is no 2 copies of cell, the cell will not have proof reading mechanism. The number of choromsomes would be unequal. DNA transcription may not be able to take place because you may not have the anti-sense strand. There are thousand and one reasons.

BTW DNA replication happens BEFORE mitosis.

Mitosis is the process where the cell is going to divide itself into two. Two different cells must have one copy each of the parent's DNA. So, the parent cell makes a copy so that two DNA sets are available. Then, it divides, giving each daughter cell one copy. Now, each daughter cell has one copy of DNA similar to the parent. Mitosis successful!!

actually it is after mitosis occurs when the DNA is replicated; in the interphase.
