A force is at work any time a mass is subject to acceleration. Gravity is one example, and it is present everywhere in the universe. The force of gravity holds you to the earth, holds the earth in orbit around the sun, holds the sun in an outer spiral arm of the galaxy, and holds our galaxy in its relation to other galaxies as the entire universe expands at a jawdroppping rate.

gravity is a force and you probably know what it is capable of.
bringing down huge structures, making you fall, making rivers flow, etc.
friction is also a force. it does slow down moving objects, create heat, etc.
