My son and i have just done this 2 days ago, we have NTL broadband, a PC downstairs and a laptop which will be used mainly upstairs, we bought a Netgear wireless kit which specifys it is to be used with NTL, it cost £60 from Argos and we got a free thingy which lets another PC share the internet (Worth £30)
It was really easy to set up and took us about 30 mins. There are simple instructions to follow so you should have no trouble.

NTL cable -> the NTL modem

NTL modem -> Cat 5 cable (not "crossover", just normal)

other end of Cat 5 cable -> your wireless router

The router manual will tell you how to set up the router.

Computers can then connect to the router by plugging direct into the router with more cat 5 cable, or wirelessly. Through the router, they all get the internet and each other if they want.

Always switch on the NTL modem FIRST. They get confused if something else wakes up before them.

First you will need to purchase a router. There are several brands to choose from. Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc.

Personal recommendations and experience is to go with Netgear. They seem to be user friendly and easy to use for the beginner. I use them myself. I have used several linksys routers as well.

The complications come from which router to get. To keep it simple, the wireless modes that consumers use have the letters at the end (802.11b or 802.11g). b = 11mbs, g = 54mbs in general. there are more, but keeping it simple

G is a little faster and is compatible with b on the most part. This is assuming you want a wireless router, not just a router to connect by wires.

Netgear offers proprietary mods on their G routers that make the signal even faster than 54mbs. However, you need to also purchase their own wireless modems to utilize the extra speed, currently they hit as high as 300mbs. (businesses of course) Without their special modems, you still can use any wireless modem of any brand and vice versa with the routers.

If your daughter has a wireless modem already built in, you should be rocking and rolling with just purchasing a G-router. The prices reflect the age of the router. The newer ones are more expensive, but older ones are just as good if you dont need anything fancy.

In terms of information... it depends on the NTL box. Can you unhook the box and connect directly to your daughters computer without problems? (meaning you have the connections, but the box is linked specifically to your son's computer).

If not, you can make that another question for another time. :^)

In terms of protection, there are three layers. firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware.

I am not confident enough to recommend a specific firewall, but if you pay for avast antivirus and webroot spy sweeper on top of the router as a hardware firewall, you are almost there from having any headaches of slow downs and glitches from poping up on your kids computers.

The router has its on protection to prevent others from sharing. So just follow instructions on how to set that up. Try without to make sure you have things running then, start password protecting the signal so no ones stealing your bandwidth.

Wireless is possible. However, WIRED is preferred. It's (networking is) faster, and more importantly, way more secure!
Wireless security is hard. Everyone who really wants to, can use YOUR internet connection, or even monitor your keyboard via the wireless network.
An often used 'security' is filtering mac-adresses. That's NOT secure; anyone can download tools to create fake mac-adresses, the ones which are whitelisted.
If you're stubbern enough to use wireless anyway, don't whine if some pedo abuses your internet-connection.

BTW, instead of a router, a UTP-crosscable is enough and cheaper. You can use the WinXP internet connection sharing, but there are other software methods too.

it relatively is desirous to establish the gadget with DHCP protocol. it is used with the aid of many DSL companies, as nicely as some Cable companies. this might set your router up with a singe IP address for the router, assigned with the aid of the IP service over the modem, and then the DHCP customer, will supply separate IP address to each and each laptop, or printer or different gadget you connect on your community. it would artwork effective for you, if that's what the computerized software needs to apply. bear in mind, you could continually press and carry the reset button on the back or backside of the router to restoration to production facility default settings, and initiate over. (carry the button for 30+ seconds.)
