What value do they add by designing outrageously immodest clothes that no person in his/her right mind would dare wear anywhere but the fashion show itself? Is the creative value of such designers over-rated?

The majority of the high fashion things you see that affect your sensibilities, are not meant to be worn, they are meant to attract the attention of the press and get into the fashion rags and that way their designers will have a name so they can sell their real, more wearable clothes. It is the creative aspect which garners attention, if you think of it more as art and less as a practical covering for the protection of the body against the elements, you will be fine. The most you can get from a runway show, is maybe...maybe...what colors and fabrics will be popular.

Runway looks have to be extreme to be noticible under the lights, with all the music and movement. It is to get attention drawn to their line. But, the average woman can take ideas and put them into her own wardrobe. As a matter of fact, many women's magazines take those runway looks and have a side by side layout with a real look that a woman could actually wear out in public.

I've often wondered that. I suppose it's just to showcase their talent and get their name known.
