Cities are banning smoking.....in public places, in bars, etc...say you go to a bar....can't smoke but then you leave. I'd rather drive out ahead of someone that had been smoking than someone sitting there drinking all night. Don't say the medical cost.....alcohol kills also.....both the liver and drunk driving...

The point about banning smoking is that when you do it, you are not only harming yourself, but also those that surround you.
I don't get "the fumes" of your beer when you drink. But I do get the nicotine-filled smoke from your cigarrette when you light up one.

I don't agree with the ban, I'm just telling you the official reasons for it. I think education remains the best deterrent for all types of addiction, and that simply dividing public places into smoking and non-smoking areas was a more fair thing to do.

good question

on smoking vs. drinking, I guess that a big difference is that there is passive smoking, whereas there isn't passive drinking, I mean the guy next to you at the bar can get trashed and your body won't be affected, but if he smokes like a chimney then you will be affected. So that's kind of logic.

on smoking / drinking vs. drugs, that's a good question. I guess it is just that it is easier to pass new restricctive laws onto law-abiding citizens, than it is to try to combat crime. After all drugs are already illegal - which does not seem to be making any difference.

I live in a city, Geneva, where many of the most beautiful parts in parks or around the lake have become conquered territory for drug dealers, resulting in high crime rates in those areas - and the city's government is doing nothing, period (occasionally a drug dealer gets arrested, spends a few days in a comfortable Swiss jail, gets released, starts dealing again). So I can very much resonate with what you say.

As a Non-Smoker I am glad I can eat my meal in peace now, without having to be immersed in second hand smoke. You can not ban alcohol, it would create big problems. The person who can not drink responsibly should not be served more alcohol by the Bartender, that would solve the problem.

I like a lot of the answers before mine. I personally think that they do this to have control over something. The state I live in wants to up cigarette tax and take that money to pay for healrh insurance for people who shouldn't even be in the United States and people living under the poverty level. What more could they possibly do to smokers?

Because smoking can infect others indirectly (passive smoking) but alcohol and drug can't do that.

I appreciate your question because I also feel the that the smokes coming out of vehicles are more dangerous than cigarette smokes, but those are ignored.

You are comparing apples to oranges. There are laws against drunk driving. There is no evidence that driving before/during/after smoking impairs your ability to drive.

Yes, but you can sit next to a drinker and not get sick, be subjected to that awful smell, or get liver damage.

Don't get pissed cuz you smoke...

Illegal drugs are outlawed/banned, we tried prohibition, so what does that tell you about human nature/crime??? Addictive behavior isn't easily controlled or rid of. People will still smoke, they just won't smoke where/how the hell they please and make others sick!
