charles lindberg was first solo flight and broke the non-stop record.
First Transatlantic Flight
May 8 - May 31, 1919. U.S. Navy flying boat NC-4 under command of Albert Cushing Read makes first transatlantic flight, 4,526 statute miles (7,284 km), from Rockaway, New York, to Plymouth, England, via Trepassey, Newfoundland, Azores, Lisbon, Portugal, and other intermediate stops, in 53 hours, 58 minutes, but he stopped at the Azores so the honour goes to:
Capt. John Alcock and Brown, a month later in June. They were the first non-stop transatlantic flight.

Since the question does not have the qualifier NONSTOP, it would seem Read and his crew would be the correct answer. They were the first to cross the Atlantic by air.
If nonstop were to be added to the question, Alcock and Brown would be correct.
It is amazing how so many confuse first solo flight with first crossing. Not just planes, either - a Zeppelin even made the crossing before Lindbergh.

Surprised at the number of wrong answers here.
Would have thought everyone knew that Alcock & Brown made the first trans-atlantic flight and won Lord Norcliffe's prize.
The Americans had tried it a month or so ealier but failed. (they'd stopped at various points e.g. the Azures, portugal etc).
And why do people keep mentioning Lindberg? his solo flight was about 8 years after Alcock & Brown had crossed the atlantic.
