They're overrated that's for sure. They lose their signals in cities because of the big buildings, and that's when you really need them! Plus I always end up having to call the people I'm visiting because it's taken me down the wrong part of their street.

Maybe you ain't or maybe he has the set up wrong. I have had one for 2 years now, Navigon (#1 best software 3 yrs in a row).
They are not 100% due to the fact that they don't take real time road changes into the calculation. The ones with the Traffic Management (TMC) are pretty good but still not 100%.
Also by the time you get your hands on the map software the data is already 1-2 years old due to data flowing up the data chain.
Sometimes you have to set up a route or multipoint routing to make it go the way you want to. Locally I only use mine to remind me of speed traps and speed limits (useful extra software) And when in a strange area, it might not be as direct as someone who grew up there, but it's one heck of a lot better then getting lost. Or not finding a specific Point of Interest (POI) like a gas station.
Best part is meeting up with someone, heck with directions, just give me your address!!!
Also if you pass a turn or can't take a turn, just keep going it will reroute you to your automatically.
Have fun and play with it to become familuar before you REALLY its help.

I've got the Tom Tom One version 2 and it is the greatest gadget ever. I have no sense of direction and find it impossible to read a map or my written out directions and drive at the same time as I usually drive alone.
I've just come back from a trip down to England and I wish I'd had it there as I got very stressed and lost.
Perhaps it would be OK if you have a passenger to read directions or maps but not when alone.
The Tom Tom just does what it says it does, it gets you from your home to wherever you want to go, finding it either by postcode or address.
GOOD TIP THOUGH: Do NOT put your home address under 'HOME' as if it gets nicked like my friend's one did, the thief then knows where you live and the fact that you are not at home!!!
Good luck with it. It is FAR superior than a book of maps.

I had to call an ambulance recently an it took about 8 minutes longer using the sat nav. Turned out it wasn't an emergency.I pointed this out to the driver and he agreed!!!
Call me old fashioned but i prefer to either use an A-Z in London or a traditional road map outside of London. Also i find the RAC or AA route finder good too.

I've got a Tom Tom 1 with the European maps added. It does exactly what it says on the tin - takes me wherever I want to go by the most direct route and with the traffic avoidance system it directs me around most hold ups.
Maybe your bf needs to check the settings because they might not be set for fastest or shortest route.

They are very good but keep your brain turned on, not as the recent occurrence where an ambulance followed the given instructions and travelled over 200 miles doing a 24 miles round trip.

My only experience was in a new S calss Mercedes with the factory fit Sat Nav. It tried to avoid a big jam on the M25, and took me in completely the wrong direction. Maps are still better in my opinion.

I totally agree with pshawfocu, ours is brilliant. Tells you exactly where you are, where to go, turns you round if you've missed a turn etc. There are a lot of different settings. Check you have the most advantageous ones to you set on there.

For the city its a bit complicated in the begining. Once you get used to it you cant be without it. But for the countryside its a great tool. My Tom comes with me everywhere I go.
