I think you might mean Kalidasa, the great dramatist of ancient India, from about 1700 years ago. He wrote in Sanskrit, which is the Greek and Latin of India. His masterpiece is "Shakuntala," a drama of true love cutting across social class: the story of a king and a lowly maiden. The German poet Goethe was a great admirer. In the last two centuries Sanskrit provided a key to the common origin of Indo- European languages, and the rediscovery of Kalidasa's work was part of that movement.
