most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

Oh Boy, the problem with the Top Ten Reviews website, is that they get money for promoting AV software, so i don't trust what they say, and the problem with the PC World review is that they've REMOVED the Spyware tests from their Anti Virus Testing???? Spyware has become a BIGGER problem than Viruses. When they DID include Spyware tests, Panda Software won hands down. Also, for a few bucks more they have Panda Internet Security, which you can set Parental Controls on, to keep kids away from XXX sites or even to block them from MySpace if you want.
Most of the others listed are fine Anti-Virus engines, but whatever you do, DO NOT get that new Microsoft Garbage, it allows almost ANY spyware to infect your system, I had several pop up generators installed on my system with that Krap running. Trend Micro is a close second, but Panda get's the highest marks for an all around solution.
If you're short on Cash, AVG Free is good, but make sure you get Zone alarm with it, since the Free version doesn't have a firewall.

Yes, Kaspersky (for just antivirus), http://www.kaspersky.com/ or if you are looking for an all-in-one suite (firewall, antivirus, antispyware) then look to Trend Micro 2007, http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/overview.htm
Both have gotten very good reviews from various sites but I think Cnet does the best job.
http://reviews.cnet.com/Trend_Micro_PC_cillin_Internet_Security_2006/4505-3667_7-31604253.html
http://reviews.cnet.com/Kaspersky_Anti_Virus_6/4505-3667_7-32004282.html
Kaspersky also makes an all encompassing suite but it did not fare as well as Trend Micro on that level. You asked for the best, not free, the best and these are two of the best. I have no doubt someone is going to mention Norton or McAfee, DO NOT use them, they're horrible, they're slow, they are by far perfect examples of how NOT to make antivirus software.

In my opinion Trend Micro PC-cillin is the best one and I have used several. It has a firewall which is a must have for a cable connection . It is easy to configure and updates several times a day. Email is scanned both incoming and outgoing. The customer service is great and it doesn't slow your system down like Norton or McAfee . You can even try it free for 30 days. To see all the features or download a trial version ,go to this web site. www.trendmicro.com

I use AVG on 8 of my computers and Avast on two of my computers. For easy of use AVG wins hands down. I like Avast. The only reason I have both was to try Avast.
I would use either with confidence.
