My son naps on his tummy..He loves his tummy! But at night we put him on his back and he is swaddled. I just feel he is too big for the swaddle but he still doesn't really have much control over his hands? Do I just try to put him to sleep on his back and not swaddle him? Your thoughts..

Sleeping on his stomach puts him at a higher risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I strongly recommend that you only let him sleep on his back (or slightly on the side - they make great foam wedges for positioning).

I would not worry about the swaddling. He will let you know when he is tired of it. When he starts turning over a lot at night/rolling around, he will want a bit more freedom in bed. For young babies, though, the swaddling is a great comfort measure. Just make sure it isn't too tight or make him too warm (another thing that can lead to SIDS).

Congrats on your little one! It sounds like you are a great mom!

hello, I know how the doctors say not to put the baby on the tummy.( when I was born that is how you had to lay the baby ...on the tummy...funny how things change) My son rolls over to his tummy while sleeping. I kept trying to make him sleep on his back, but he rolls back over. I think it will be fine. As for the swaddling, as long as your baby want to be swaddled, you can do it. When he starts breaking out of the swaddle, then it is time to let him sleep with out it. My son is 6 months, since 3 months he would break out of the blanket, so we stopped attemping swaddling.

Most Doctors agree that Swaddling is still ok until about 6 months, if baby seems comfortable with it.
You might just experiment and try letting him sleep unswaddled at night. You might be pleasantly surprised! I know that at 4 months my daughter (seemingly overnight) gained a lot more control over her hands and arms; thus waking herself up much less than earlier in her days.

If he is old enough that he can roll himself from front to back, then it is FINE for him to be on his tummy if that is what he prefers.
