Football was originally discovered in England with the formation of the first football club (Sheffield FC) in 1856. When the sport of rugby developed later in the same century, the sports were renamed Association Football and Rugby Football. As countries around the world became involved in the sport, they already had games that were referred to as 'football', the obvious being American Football in the US and Australian Rules Footall in Australia. To differentiate these sports, the US began to call it 'soccer', even though the name 'football' has stuck around the majority of the world.

Hope this helps

In the US, what others call "football" or "futbol", we call "soccer" because we have our own version of "football."

Personally, I think "football" is a stupid name for our game, but it won't be changed because we are so accustomed to calling it "football", even though there are only a few situations when the ball is actually kicked (kickoffs, punts and field goals). If I had it my way, our version of "football" would be called "pigskin", lol.

Soccer is a game played with a ball. In soccer, you kick the ball in a definate areawhich is covered with net. In soccer, you cannot push the person and throw him on the ground. Only one point is given when scored.
In football, players actually fight for the ball and there is no definate area except for the end of the ground as the goal.
