The simplist way to render pensioner poverty a thing of the past, surley is to enlist all pensioners into the Members of Parliment scheme.

"scheme" is the correct phrasing, as any pension plan (not just one run by the government) is nothing more than a pyramid scheme.

I'd much prefer to handle something as important as my own retirement personally.

That would enrich them alright, however, I do not think that the State pension was ever intended to be enough to live on. Retirees were always expected to have some savings of their own.

'Santa sid's' comment is out of order. It is not the fault of current retirees, that the government has not invested the contributions they have made over their lifetime into an investment fund. That has always been the problem, the contributions have all gone into the general taxation pot for immediate spending. It continues to be a problem.

extremely good point. If pensioners' incomes were linked to MP's salaries, i.e. whatever percentage the MP salaries rise is what the pensions rise, then it would be a lot fairer.
Frankly I think most pensioners get a very raw deal from the government. Council tax rises 6%, pensions rise 3% ... how on earth do they manage?
