Sit in a dark room for a bit. Don't have any distractions at all and stay quiet, it always helps me. Go to the doctors, he gave me some tablets which helped, I can't remember what they were called though. I always feel like I'm having a stroke when I get one, pins and needles in my mouth and I can't even speak, oh they are horrible!!!

It's funny how this question is in the alternative medicine category and yet people are prescribing western medicine. Get a clue!!! If you have been suffering from migraines for quite some time and it has become chronic then alternative medicine is the best way to go. I would recommend seeing a registered massage therapist weekly to help loosen up the tight muscles in your shoulder, neck and upper back area. Sometimes the tightness can be the cause. Also Acupuncture is a great Chinese healing method, it's very effective for migraines as studies have showed. What ever options you choose, I hope that it helps. No one should have to live with such pain.

Migraines are tricky... there are many different causes, many of which still aren't completely understood, and many people respond quite differently to treatment options. Indeed - what helps one person may actually make another's migraines worse. You gotta find what works for you.

In general, I think the best answer is to intervene as soon as you possibly can. That means learning to predict the onset of migraines. Some people experience visual disturbances before the pain sets in - colored geometric shapes that seem to float outside your peripheral vision. Some people get naseaus, some people get stiff. It doesn't take most migraine sufferers long to learn their own personal warning signs.

Intervention can range from rest in a dark room, as mentioned above, to any number of drugs, both prescription and not. Once again - what works for you tends to be very individualized. Personally, straight aspirin is my only real hope (exluding some of the stronger prescription meds which I haven't tried). If I take a double-dose of fast acting aspirin, and lie down as soon as the signs appear - I can now abort maybe 70% of my migraines. I've also got a prescription for midrin, though I haven't tried it yet. Other sufferers do better with other otc drugs (over the counter), like ibuprofen, excedrin migraine, aleve, tylenol, etc.

So - in summary - go to your doctor before you have another one, ask for a prescription for a low-risk migraine-specific drug (you can try the harder stuff later if the soft stuff doesn't cut it), keep the script & whatever otc pain killer works for you with you at all times, and at the VERY FIRST SIGNS of a potential migraine, take your pills, find a hole to crawl into, and lie down ;)
As I'm sure you know, once you hit the point of no return, you're in for the ride. The key is to stop them before they start.

Talk to your doctor. I have suffered from migrains all of my life. There are excellent prescription drugs out there...Imetrex is one. You may want to try Excedrine Migrain. It works well enough, if the headache is not too bad. Usually, the best "medicine" is to lie down in a quiet, darkened room, and sleep for a couple of hours.

Go to a neurologist. I've had migraines all my life. They are triggered differently for everyone, so my way might not work for you. I have a Coke (for the caffeine) and 2 Aleve. It works suprisingly well, if I'm in a dark room by myself with little or no noise. But you should really talk to your doctor about neurologists in your area if they bother you often.

Take two relatively strong pain killers, such as iboprufen, and spend some time in a darkened room cutting out as much artificial light as possible.
Try to take a nap if possible else simply lie down and keep eyes closed.
Blocking out sound can also help although a little gentle music can help you to relax.
It should go within 10 - 20 mins depending on how powerful the migrane is.

I got prescription migraine medication from my doctor, but you have to take it at the very first sign of a migraine for it to be effective. If you don't have a prescription, cancel your day and take the maximum dose of whatever you normally take for pain relief. If you can manage to function, get a massage or take a warm bath.

Do not laugh! My grandmother's home remedy was a sliced potato on her forehead, & total rest away from the light. Also keep away from caffeine & dark chocolate for a while .
