Some people don't need to take their computer with them.

Laptops cost more than Desktops. The distance has closed dramatically from a few years ago, but it is still there. Some people just don't justify the need to buy a laptop because they won't be taking it anywhere.

Generally, in my experience, desktops tend to be easier to upgrade than laptops. Due to the complex puzzle-like nature that laptop designers choose to make their products as small as possible, they remove customizability out of the picture. Usually, there is a way, it's just more hassle.

All in all, it really is what the consumer wants, and what suits them.

More room to work with, easier to upgrade and more options for upgrade, cheaper, I can go on forever. They both have there benefits, but you have to put a ton of money into a laptop to make it a decent gaming machine, it takes half of that for a desktop..

Guy under me, thats not true- you can do just as much with a laptop if you get the right one that will support more upgrades, BUT it will cost alot more...

I still love my 21" monitor, my big keyboard, my dual Raptor drives and the ability to swap out older hardware for newer devices as they become available. Are there any laptops that let you run RAID 0 configs with dual SLI video cards?

Not everyone wants or needs the mobility offered by a laptop.

Desktops tend to be cheaper, more powerful, easier to upgrade, easier to keep cool for those overclocking, can install more components.
People generally like laptops for their small size and protability, but they don't really get them to be the most powerful computers on the market.
