They are considered unclean (considering they eat their own sh*t and vomit I can see why!) and so are pigs (omnivorous and dirty). Some Muslims (wrongfully) say cats are unclean too, despite their immaculate cleanliness. We can however have a dog if there is a justification of the need. If we have one as a pet we should keep it outside/wash our hands after touching them. Naturally, I wash my hands after touching most any animal! However, some Muslims may actually be scared of big dogs. I don't know; personally I like pugs, chihauhas, huskies, golden retrievers and samoyeds. There is a lot of controversy in Islam as to whether or not a dog is dirty (najas). Anyway, hope this helped. Peace.

Most of the Muslims I know in this country get a dog and train it to guard the house or fight (as in pitbull). Therefore, they don't know how to act around a "pet" dog. They train all their dogs to be mean, so they assume you have done the same with yours.

We aren't fearful of pet dogs it's just that we aren't allowed to have dogs as pets.We can have them as guard dogs but not as pets. The reason for this is that we believe that angels won't enter a house which has a dog in it.Also we believe that dogs are unclean animals and if a dog licks you or your clothes,it becomes unclean.Hope this helps!
