My computer has no "hard" volume knob.

I assume that your VAIO is running some version of Microsoft Windows. In that case, here's what to do.

Click the "Start" button
Choose "Settings", and then "Control Panel"
The Control Panel window will open.
Look for an item named "Volume Control", or something similar. (The exact name of it may be different on your computer. It may also be called "Sound", or "Audio Devices")
Double-click on "Volume Control" (or similar name)
There, you will find a slide bar that controls the sound volume. There will probably also be a "Mute" button to silence it completely.
