The years were never given in the early Star Trek episodes (just stardates), it was only in the later series of TNG (set in the 24th century -the episode "The Neutral Zone") where they revealed to a group of 20thC humans what the real current Earth year was. Since then the makers of DS9, Voyager and Enterprise have used "years" rather than stardates on quite a number of occasions. The original show was always intended to be vague about the exact timeframe, hence why stardates were invented in the first place!

Based on that, and each season supposedly equalling a year, compiliers of books such as the Star Trek Chronology started to work things out and form a timeline of the series, which in time would come to be used by the shows producers and writers themselves.

The "Classic" Star Trek series with Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc. on the five year mission, was backdated in this way to having took place from the year 2265. The Next Generation (Picard and Co.) took place a century later from the year 2364 forward. Deep Space Nine started in the year 2369, and Enterprise was set sometime in the 2100s.

Which series? Enterprise is set in the 22nd century (begins 2151). Original Star Trek (Kirk) is set in the 23rd century (2260-), NextGeneration is set in the 24th century (and so are Voyager and Deep Space Nine) - the years there are all over the place, but roughly one season is equivalent to one year in Trek time (in general) - but then Trek is all over the place in time, Picard witnesses the beginning of the universe thanks to Q, for example.

I thought it was the 23rd century in the start, and then the 24th for Picard; But thats from memory. Doesn't the StarDate give the Year at part of it? So if you look at the scripts it should show the century ( I can't right now, the firewall here stops certain searches).
