Don't ever forget what president Roosevelt said in his analogy of a war loan. "We will lend Britain a hosepipe to put the fire out and when they have finished with it they can return it to us". Unfortunately the hose pipe was destroyed in the fire and we have being paying interest and capital for it ever since.

The British honoured their debt and never debated with the US about it, or tried to get it wavered.

It is well known that most of the wealth of the 'Empire' was also used in buying military equipment from the US. So, the States didn't do too badly from it.

However, by losing this wealth, which had been built up over the previous centuries, Britain became a much weaker country militarily.

The Western World is probably much weaker and in a worse position because it.

It seems that perhaps the British were the only honorable country aided by the Americans. Others received far greater help and paid back far less... Many citizens of today seem to think it was an entitlement. I don't think we deserve undying gratitude, but a little less arrogance and hostility would go a long way.

I could emagine that very possible!
Firstly, the US, decided that using the credit system, they could automatically be the richest state in the world by simply taking the money from the most desperate country in the work and offering them total security.

In a sense, gangs do the same, they demand protection money from the businesses that operate in a desperate suburb.

The JF Kennedy administration was against such business tactics and was therefore decidedly denied any significant historical achievement which may have improved their parties standing and perhaps the face of the US Today.

One of the reasons why the Germans have economic dependence now is that the resources they received to rebuild the country after the war cost nothing. Britain had to pay their debts back.

I think for the American Government WWII was a simple commercial and very profitable excercise.

According to the story I saw on the BBC online yesterday, yes, Britain has just now paid off war debt to the US -- from WW2. However there is still billions-worth still owed from WW 1! Never outright repudiated, just neglected. As for self interest, bull$h1t. Hitler was never a threat to the US. Even Japan wasn't interested in invading the US, just neutralizing our naval power until they finished kicking the Empire's @$$ in Malaysia. If anything, Roosevelt was more interested in propping up his buddy Stalin.

"So what part of Europe are you from--the part whose @$$ we kicked, or the part whose @$$ we saved?"

The US was not helping the UK. They were helping themselves. Because as history shows it would only be a matter of time before they were attacked too.

and yet after we thought we learned our mistakes from WWII America and Britain are at it again but now in the middle east, this debt will probably happen again as Britain is running out of oil, America is taking over oil rigs in the middle east.
