Paul Hausser: tactical genius, his II SS Panzer Corp defeated a Soviet Army 7 times its size at the 3rd Battle of Kharkov (Feb 43). He was one of the few generals who directly disobeyed the Fuhrer's order to not retreat.

Rommel: notable for his blitzkrieg tactics in France and North Africa. His distinct leadership quality was leading from the front.

Kurt "Panzer" Meyer: A Waffen SS general awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oakleaves and Swords, the third highest military decoration in Germany. He was the youngest divisional commander of both sides. Notable battles were Kharkov & Normandy.

Manstein: strategical genius on the Eastern Front helped stem the tide of the Red Army after the defeat at Stalingrad.

Heinz Guderian: the father of blitzkrieg war, use of massed tank formations at the point of attack.

The only great person, that comes to mind was not a General, but was Field Marshall Rommel. I don't know of any great German war Generals.

Well obviously Erwin Rommel was a genius tactician.He lead the Axis effort in North Africa.Heinz Guderian was a tank commander who led the german blitkrieg in Poland and France.
