I can live with any debt to Canada. They were in the war from the start, unlike the yanks who only joined after Pearl harbour and then charged us as well. I am surprised that we are not charging Bush for the use of our troops in all his recent wars.

It is very difficult to say exactly how much Germany paid back towards the cost(s) of WW2.

Let me give you an example of what happened at the end of WW2. One famous sweet maker in England sent a fleet of trucks to Germany and removed equipment from sweet making factories and returned it to UK. The British company concerned then started making a sweet which it called "Smarties". These were in fact a UK version of "M&Ms".

Lots of other companies removed equipment from Germany. I'm not sure of the legality of what they did but certainly the British and US authorities in Germany at the time seemed to have turned a blind eye.

By far the most idiotic removal was made by the Russians. They cut down an enormous crane at a German shipyard and transported it back to Russia only to find they could not put it back together again. So much scrap iron.

i don't know how much they had to pay for the second world war but Germany signed the treaty of Versailles after the first world war which caused Germany to be very poor especially after the wall street crash as the money that the U.S government loaned to Germany was withdrew and was a reason why the second world war started because of the harsh conditions that were put upon Germany, France wanted to be harsh on Germany as it caused so much damage to the country and as the Germans retreated during the closing of the first world war they destroyed buildings unnecessarily such as mines, Britain's Prime minister at the time didn't want to be harsh on Germany as he still wanted to trade with Germany and he knew that this would cause problems later on.

also because of the second world war many countries gave money to japan and germany to rebuild Britain lost out really big because of this war, they gave money to Germany,Canada and the U.S, Britain was broke a empire which once owned 1/4 of the world.

i would really be interested to find how the hell Britain got back on its feet and is now the 5th richest country for such a small country we really have done alot, good and bad

I think the answer is none. After the war GB gave Germany extensive aid to rebuild its infrastructure, that's why they quickly re-established a manufacturing industry and overtook the rest of the free world in building its economy.
In the meantime GB was struggling to make headway in the global market.
Now GB has given away all its national assets and we will never again be a world leader. The general public are now faced with at least 50 years of tax rises to keep the country afloat.

I heard that this morning. 84 million to complete payments related to war debts incurred. To me this is just a reaffirmation of the bond between our two countries. I salute the people of Britain for honoring their commitments and may the friendship between our nations continue long into the future.

" the u.s.a made millions from ww2 but britain was made bancrupt the only country to pay off war depts we can move forward now within europe we dont need this special relationship with the yanks"

Fine, let's have a do-over. Take care of nasty old Adolf on your own, and when he's done and the swastika is flying on Windsor Castle, maybe you can escape to Australia. Oops! Tojo got there first! That Rising Sun flag sure looks pretty on the Sydney Harbour Bridge!

"So what part of Europe are you from--the part whose @$$ we kicked, or the part whose @$$ we saved?"

As a Canadian, I thank you for giving us our unique sense of humour, our dignity (we learned from the best) and honour. It is a pleasure to be considered part of the commonwealth family.
