I want to make a baby blanket for my future child (ttc) and I am not sure which looks nicer. I do not know how to do either but am willing to teach myself one or both.

This is a really hard question to answer, because both knitting and crochet are a lot of fun and extremely rewarding, but I'll try.

For a blanket that will become a 'blankie' to be dragged around and loved, I prefer crochet. It's usually more three-dimensional and results in a sturdier fabric for whatever the weight of yarn you'll be using. Also, the ramp-up time between "beginner" stage and making good-looking items is shorter with crochet, and it's much, much faster to crochet a blanket (of whatever size) than to knit one..

I find stitching to be fun with other people, too, so don't forget to go to Craigslist or use Yahoo to find knit or crochet groups in your area. If you attend a few meetings, people will be happy to show you how to do it, and you can gain so much from watching experienced stitchers ply their craft that you'll have even more fun!

The answer to that question is they both look nice. There are many simple patterns in either --whatever you learn, you will be able to make something special.

Check out www.crochetpatterncentral.com and www.knittingpatterncentral.com Both of these have very good "how to " directions as well as many patterns to download for free.

Some people prefer one technique over another, but they both look nice. If you learn both, you can combine them into one project. I was given a baby blanket that had knit squares with a crochet border around each and then sewn together.

For a blanket, I'd say crochet. There are some really pretty things you can do with lace knitting techniques for blankets, and I (being a knitter) personally prefer them, but it's *much* easier to get similar effects from crochet. Knitting, I think, is better suited to clothing.

I think for most things knit but for a baby blanket I think crochet looks really nice. I would go with green or yellow that way if it's a boy or a girl you can still use it. good luck

I agree, Crochet looks and keep nicer when washed, or dry cleaned. Crochet is much easier to learn, here's a great link to help get started www.anniesattic.com, with crochet, you only use a hook with knitting you use 2 needles, and knitting can roll on you and you need to block it, but I have never had to block crochet.
Congratulations
Have fun!

1. IMO- Knitted items look nicer, are softer, takes less yarn to make something, look more "professionally done"...But takes longer to do.

2. Crocheting is fast, takes more yarn, and doesn't look as nice....Also with a baby, you would want to make the blanket with single crochet stitches only...so there's no holes for baby to get fingers and toes tangled in.

They both look nice. But I can tell you that knitting has become VERY popular, so I'm thinking people must enjoy doing that better! Plus I think it would go quicker to knit one rather than crochet it! Have fun!

I prefer knitting myself. But that could be because I'm completely useless at crochet.

it depends on what type of blanket your talking about...Knit has only two types of stitches:knit and purl which makes the patterns a lot easier and crochet has a lot..so it all goes according to which type...Good luck

Well, it kind of depends on who you are. You could look up pictures of the different stitches to see which one you like most, but if you ask other people you are probably going to get different answers. I, personally, like crochet better, but you should really just decide for yourself.
