That's the stupidest question I've ever heard. Of course it is, if it's alive and it isn't vegetable matter (you know, plants etc.), it's an animal, isn't it! I think the only other living things that are not classed as either would be single-cell organisms, but a shark clearly isn't one of those either. And contrary to the above comment, it's not a mammal, it's a fish (he's thinking of whales I should imagine, which ARE mammals). I'd be curious to know what exactly you thought it was if it wasn't an animal - a vegetable or mineral perhaps?

Up until the 1950s and 60s, textbooks only referred to two kingdoms of living beings, Animals (including protozoa) and Plants (including bacteria). These are the same two suggested by Linnaeus, and retained by esoteric systems of thought, such as Theosophy and Anthroposophy, and unified science and metaphysics paradigms like those of Arthur Young and Edward Haskell, all of whom added inanimate (e.g. mineral) and - in the case of the theosophists non-physical ("elemental") kingdoms on, giving all of them the same grade as Animals and Plants.
Even if you think we should break the kindoms in two or five sharks are still animal.
TAXON* ===== Great white shark
Kingdom ==== Animalia
Phylum ===== Chordata
Class ====== Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish)
Order ====== Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays)
Family ===== Selachii
Genus ====== Carcharodon
Species ==== carcharias

Why is there so much confusion about animals / mammals?
Mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects and bank managers are ALL animals. It is that simple.
The shark is a fish, and lives almost entirely on rum - based cocktails, generally with a cherry on a stick and drunk through a straw. It is therefore an animal.
(That last bit about living on cocktails is probably untrue. Had you going for a minute there, didn't I?).

Does a shark take in oxygen and put out CO2? Then yes it is an animal. Basically if you can see it move of it's own accord, it's an animal. If it's one celled, then its probably a bacteria or protozoan.

NO, a shark is a fish as it doesn't have to surface for air, Whales and Dolphins are both mammals (animals) as they have to go to the surface of the water to breathe in air.
