A promise ring - usually a precursor to marriage:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promise_ring
"A promise ring or friendship ring is to a romantic partner to signify a promise to be committed in a monogomous relationship, usually a precursor to marriage. The gift of the ring indicates that serious courting is under-way. It can be given as a symbol that a couple does not feel that it is an appropriate time to consider engagement or marriage but are serious about each other and their relationship. A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world."

I agree, diamonds have become way way overpriced due to greed in the jewerly business. and DeBeers has spent billions making sure that women equate love with an expensive diamond.
A diamond is only expensive because of the manipulations of De beers. Don't let them fool you.
Any kind of jewlery, be it a peircing of stainless steel, or any more common things like a bracelet or ring, or ANYTHING...... It can even be fashioned out of something that you make yourself.
but forget what the "business people" say that you have to have in order to have love. you don't need to spend a lot of money on a useless trinket. Spend it on a nice vacation instead. You'll always have the memory of that!!!

without a firm commitment of marriage...
Necklace, bracelet, Ear rings and watches are the standard fare in jewelry

There are so many other stones that women love. Go to a nice jewelry store and tell the sales person your dilemma. Explain what type of girl she is. Make it personal for her. A nice necklace of good quality is wonderful, in my opinion. If your gal doesn't like what you give her then you might re-think the committed part.
ps - don't go overboard, be subtle
pss - black onyx in gold setting is beautiful

A necklace, a bracelet, a ring of any other sort (what's her favorite stone), earrings, an anklet.....there's all sorts of options......will this piece of jewelry represent your committment? Get her a birthstone ring.....or a ring with the stone of the month you met......that would be neat......Good luck!!

something native to your area might be nice, try researching your area. in utah there's a lot of turquoise for sale by native americans.
or maybe get something inscribed on any other peice of jewelry, like a pendant that says "love" or something meaningful to the two of you.

A bracelet. They are easier to wear all the time and keep track of--necklaces can be pulled off with shirts or broken by hairbrushes.

Any precious stone sapphire, onyx or anything to her liking. I think we should be more open in committed relationship. Ask her what she would like and give it to her provided it suits your pocket.
