Come to Pennsylvania! We have great cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, lots of small towns, and plenty of rural countryside. There are tons of historic and cultural things to do (Gettysburg and Steamtown USA are two of my favorites) and there are lots of outdoor things too if you're into that (the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, Ohiopyle, Youghiogheny River rafting, and Pymatuning Lake fishing are a few). There's "fun stuff" too like Hershey, Kennywood amusement park, PNC Park, etc.).
West Virginia is a beautiful place to visit too, especially if you are into outdoor activities like hiking, biking, rafting, etc.

Wow there are a million places to see in the USA. Last summer I took a car trip mostly along Interstate I-80 from the east coast to the west coast. Here a few great places I think you should see and some info to go with them:
Chicago, IL (the Windy City) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago
San Francisco, CA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco
Las Vegas, NV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas
The Grand Canyon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grand_Canyon
Zion National Park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zion_national_park
There is alot more of this great nation to see - and alot more than I saw on my trip last summer - but that is a great start. I would also suggest checking out little old Newport, RI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_%28RI%29 near me which is know as America's first resort town and you can see all the mansion of the late 19th century - early 20th century robber barons.
Good luck and enjoy your trip!!!

Go to places that you will see again on TV or movies, because it is like a flash back and you will keep remembering your vaccation. This works well because, let's say you were in San Francisco, you will remember that street, or Times Square New York.
So. my advice to you, in order, and is cheap from Washington,
New York (Time Square, Ground Zero and the Metropolitan Museum)
San Francisco, LA.; Everyone tries to go to Yellowstone, if you are camper, but I don't think about it.
Hawaii is nice, but expensive and not convenient to Washington.

Go to the Grand Canyon in early Summer or Fall, not when it's too hot in the Inner Canyon (July August).
The Grand Canyon is the most colorful, spectacular National Park you will EVER see !!

Hawai'i comes to mind. It would be expensive, but worth it. If you do that (and I would suggest the Big Island) I would rent a four-wheel drive so you could drive to the top of the mountains
