It is called "impulse control." Which takes practice to obtain. Some people have a really difficult time with this because they have a "spring loaded" personality trait. (Artisan Temperament)
To master this, you will need to use a clock for practice. Training your mind to wait longer each time before doing something. During this, guess the consequence of the action. It's the only thing I know that has been proven to work. (because you have to sit with that consequence-while you wait)

If you are talking about temptations that you feel are bad, like over gambling, or seeing if you can steal something, I would suggest that you first talk about it with someone you trust or a therapist
If you are not able to do that, try finding your inner thoughts and where the temptation is coming from... If it's the 'thrill' of it, then just replace it with a 'thrill' that has doesn't have jail time attached to it like skydiving or something...
I know that sounds extreme but you haven't really explained the nature of your 'temptation' so depending on how deep it runs and that you feel you need to defeat it, divert your mind every time that you head towards it (detour) and go towards your new temptation... join a drama club, exorcise, learn a new language, go on thrill rides.... there is so much.
I hope that helps a little?
Good luck

I agree with the a previous answer. Wait a few minutes before attempting the behavior and your common sense may kick in.
I am allergic to certain foods but the craving is so strong. The allergies are cause a degree of discomfort that can last for a couple of days sometimes.. many times I am lured by the instant gratification and get very angry at myself when I give in. I continue to do it over and over again though except for certain times when my brain out does my emotion. I'm looking to increase those times but it's difficult. Hey I will succeed. I have to keep saying it. Good luck with whatever it is your tempted by that bad for you. Hopefully you can overcome it as well.

If U don't U will put yourself in a compromising situation.Focus on anything other than that compromising position and U will be surprised at what self control U really do have - Inside. For U are the only one that can master this feat-for U must master Yourself.

Tell yourself you are the boss of you and pinch yourself when you think your temptation is trying to take over. Get control of yourself!

the only way to avoid temptations is to die, or enter a comatose state.
