Ask yourself if you had serviced the transmission about every 40,000-50,000 miles, more or less, and fluid checked and/or changed regularly. You didn't state the mileage on the car.
If you failed to do this until your problem arose, it's no doubt too late. Was there ever a leak observed?
It can be rebuilt but it may cost you as much or more than a "new" rebuilt one. These are rebuilt by factory trained techs. Your old one will be traded in on it.
Be sure to have it done by a reliable tranmission service with some warranty. You'll be looking in excess of $1000 up to $2000, maybe more.
Ideling may be only a tuneup.
Your decision should be made in consideration of the mileage.
That car is 14 years old. You may have a big hole to pour money into.

Only my experience with another make. Once from a leak, another from over heating.

Idle speed has nothing to do with it. I think your transmission is toast.

time to trade it in..unless your brother in law works at ammco transmission shop..the idle is something else, unrelated to trans prob.
