What marriage is at its simplest is an oath of fidelity to one person. How can that ever get outdated?

if you love someone, but don't think you'll be with them all your life, or you think you would like to see other people as well as them, then by all means don't get married. But don't belittle those who choose to say their vows AND keep them. It's not their fault you are unsettled in your life.

Marriage is definately not outdated. Marriage is a covenant between two people that pledge their lives together. They make a choice to be with that person for the rest of their lives. It is not something entered into lightly and not something that should be broken hastily.

Marriage allows each person to be who they truly are with the other person. Marriage gives safety and stability to a relationship that is not found in relationships who will not take that step.

Marriage is knowing that even if you are unlovable, ill, or broke, you have someone there for you. Marriage is always having someone safe to rely on. When the outside world beats you up, your partner will encourage you.

I know that some people think you can have all this without marriage and that many marriages are not like this, but this is what God intended when He designed the institution. A two becoming one in heart and goals.

And marriage is the best and safest place for sex.

People usually marry to legally protect the woman and children
as well as formalizing the mutual commitment to the relationship.
It is not outdated..
Many women discover the value of legal marriage, much to their
chagrin & disappointment , after the break up with a boyfriend
after many years and find themselves, and their kids, on the street
without support or future prospects.

To answer you initial question either because they're extremely stupid or they believe the shotgun is loaded. Marraige, even though civil ceremonies exist, is still tied into religion. As religion is going out of fashion, so is marraige.

No not at all. People don't have to marry but they do it to show commitment to each other. It is solely their choice, no-one forces anyone to get married.
