how to calculate total expenditure of a family?

To calculate total expediture you must calculate every expense. Housing, utilities, healthcare, childcare, food, education, insurance, etc. Basically every dollar that is spent in that particular household must be accounted for. Most households do not do this, so estimates can be used, but you must state that it is an estimate and not true numbers, so as not to skew the assumptions made on the final results. A budget is the document you would use to determine if expenditures outweigh income, of course you would prefer a balanced budget that shows more income than expenditures. For a project, especially a live presentation project, charts of percentage of income expediture per category can be quite impressive.
