The Puritains Established Harvard University in order to train men for the clergy in 1636.

William and Mary (at the time it was not a University by today's definition) was 2nd Approx 1695

Yale was Third 1701

Rule #1 in the original Harvard Honaor code.

"Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life, John 17:3; and therefore to lay Jesus Christ as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning. And seeing the Lord only giveth wisdom, let everyone seriously set himself by prayer in secret to seek it of him (Proverbs 2:3)."

Harvard is the Oldest American University.
It was founded in 1643.

The College of William and Mary is the second oldest.
It was founded in 1693.

I believe that would be William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA.
