She's probably afraid of the darkness outside rather than inside. Mention some of these possibilities to her:
Does she have decent security on the house? Doors she can lock from the inside etc?
Security lights out the back and front doors, which go on if there's movement.
Getting a dog or cat for company - the former will also guard the house.
Why is her husband working nights - how often will it be and for how many nights a week?
If it's only occasionally, could she invite someone over to spend the night, or consider staying with a friend?
Tell her to treat herself to help her relax - nice dinner (maybe something her husband doesn't like that she never gets to cook), rent a special movie etc - get her to learn how to enjoy her independence and appreciate her husband not being there!
Give her your contact numbers and tell her to keep a phone and the details by the bed, so if she's worried, she can call you and feel secure in the knowledge you'll be there in a flash!

I think you realize that the issue is really not about being scared of the dark. You also seem concerned about visiting a neighbor's wife in his absence....and you rightfully should be. Unless the husband has asked you to stop in to check on the wife, I don't think I'd be rushing over to their house any time soon. You may soothe the situation over by letting her know (and in his presence hopefully) that you're available on an 'as needed basis' and that she can call if she needs you. In the event it becomes necessary to visit the 'silly cow' (as you put it) it may be a good idea to ensure your own spouse or S.O. accompanies you for the 'safety check'.

Well you could tell her to leave some lights on. Having a pet would help. I would talk to her husband, or tell her to. Let night visits of the opposite sex, even if only friendly are just asking for trouble. Good Luck!

Tell her that you are also afraid of the dark and that you will send Mrs London Bloke in to see if she's ok.

tell her if she's that scared of the dark to tell her husband that she will be inviting you over just to make sure everything is safe. if her husband is happy with it do it but as you know keep it proffesional - if you don't want to do it then tell her straight.
