Google Moon

In honor of the 36th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing (July 20, 2005), Google took public domain imagery from NASA of the Moon, and integrated it into the Google Maps interface. By default this tool, with a reduced set of features, also displays the points of landing of all Apollo spacecraft to land on the Moon. This tool also includes an easter egg, displaying a Swiss cheese design at the highest zoom level. Google Moon, as it is called, was linked from a special commemorative version of the Google logo displayed at the top of the main Google search page for the duration of July 20 (UTC).

It's probably only useful for "space buffs" I guess...

Google Moon was originally created to commemorate / honor the first lunar landing, which occurred on July 20, 1969, to give Google users an opportunity to use their computers to more "easily" surf around the lunar surface themselves.

Google accomplished this by adding NASA imagery to the Google Maps interface to help folks visit to the moon (without actually going there! - lol).

I have questions and/or comments about Google Moon you can e-mail them at google_moon@google.com.

Good Luck!

Google Moon provides NASA imagery of the moon through the Google Maps. It shows a very limited number of satellite images from the moon.
