It depends on where you live.

Best thing to do is contact the Housing Benefit Department at the Council and ask them to do a Pre Tenancy Determination on the property you are thinking of renting.

They will do this quite quickly and this will let you know how much HB you would get.

The Council will send a rent officer to assess the market value of the property. You may end up with a proportion to pay unless you are on Income Support. Like one of the above replies says, get a pre-tenancy determination done first and go from there.

It depends on your own personal needs. I was on income support as a single parent and they have to come round and look at the property and calculate a figure. It is calculated on your present benefits, needs and areas ...sorry I couldn't be more precise.
