I recently took the time to learn php and mysql and I found that http://www.devshed.com has great tutorials I did several from there and several from http://www.webmonkey.com .
I have learned quite a bit and now I feel completely confident with both PHP and SQL. One piece of advice is to go to http://www.wampserver.com/ and install this software (it's free) so that you can test your PHP/SQL project without having to upload the file to the server every time.
