Don't mind all of the speculations. All educated people know that the question is unanswerable. There is no accepted justification, so don't bother.

Hen is a bird

Birds evolved from dinosaurs.

so the egg carrying the mutated genes had to come before the hen.

No not all dinosaurs were big. Some were quite small and they did have feathers. Even some of the big ones had feathers.

Yes indeed it was the egg that came before the hen.

This depends on what kind of egg you mean. If you specifically mean a chicken egg, then the chicken came first. However, that chicken too came from an egg, though one not laid by a chicken (and therefore not technically a chicken egg).

The chicken evolved from a lizard way back. So at some point, there was a creature which was almost, but not quite, a chicken. That creature laid an egg (which was almost, but not quite, a chicken egg) from which hatched the chicken.

So egg -> chicken -> chicken egg

(This is a gross simplification of science, but it solves the paradox well enough.)

Well, it depends on whether you're a creationist or an evolutionist. For a creationist, it would be the hen. Coz God created the animals, birds, etc etc.
If it was an evolutionist, I'm guessing that it would be an evolved egg of some sort of reptile that hatched into a chicken :)
Cheers!

Hen! of course, after that...it became productive, and had a egg.

The egg. Something evolved into a chicken, and the egg had to be laid that had the first full fledged chicken in it before that chicken could exist.
