I'm gonna bet your external USB drive is a Maxtor. I have one and had similar problems. Here are two things you can try:

1. a.) unplug USB cable from comp.
b.) Power up external drive and wait about a minute (this will allow the disk time to spin up to optimum speed.
c.) Plug USB cable into comp. Is drive recognized?
If yes great. If still not recognized reinstall software that came with drive.
As I mentioned I had the same problem with external and reinstalled the software. Now it's fine.
BTW, if it is a Maxtor drive, there known to be a bit 'buggy'.

Sometimes you need to reboot your computer before the new drive is recognized. I had that problem a few days ago. Also as the other guy said make sure that it is formatted. I had to reformat my drive as well.

Try
- right-click my computer
- manage
- storage
- disk management

If it shows up there, then you can right-click to assign a drive letter.

If not, go to the device manager and see if you're missing drivers or something.

Feel free to email me if you get stuck...
