The correct name is "Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo" with an "r". The Core architecture is another evolution of the way a processor can process data (like the MMX or SSE extensions before). The Core Duo now uses two processor cores, like the AMD X2 processors.

The Core 2 Duo is just a more energy saving variant of the Core Duo architecture.
