The simple answer is since 6th March 1957 when the 'Big Six' steered the country to independence from Britain.

However, prior to independence Ghana didn't exist and so on that basis Ghana has always been an independent country.

Ghana is an amalgamation of the Gold Coast and part of Togoland. The Gold Coast and British Togoland were under British control and French Togoland was under French Control.

In the early 1950's independence for the Gold Coast was looming and in May 1956 British Togoland became a part of the Gold Coast and French Togoland simply become Togo. On 6th March 1957 the Gold Coast (which now included British Togoland) was granted independence from Britain and the country of Ghana was born.

It was the first black African country to obtain independence from colonial rule. Upon achieving independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, the name Ghana was chosen for the new nation as a reference to its ancient roots in the Empire of Ghana.
