I have noticed that Americans prounce the name of this country as I mentioned above; people, TV, etc. , including soldiers who came back. I understand that the word "tide" is prounced "tyed" because the consenant following the "I" is followed by a vowel "E", but this should not be the case in the word "Iraq". Could someone explain that to me

it has been a habbit of old english americans(the era of washington) that if a word begins with a vowel and proceeded with a consonant and then followed by a vowel again.
the first vowel is pronounced in it's long form (i- "ay").
and i think it sounds more westernized and appealing.
but in arabic Iraq is pronounced as ''ee-rak''. more emphasized in the short form of the vowel (i=''ee'')
...and this way it sounds more simpler and easily middle-eastern- ized.
hope you get it.

Is this supposed to be a question or just a negative comment to incite more negativity? I would say that you're wrong about people getting offended if you said " "Eye-llinois" for Illinoise ". We would probably just correct you and tell you how it's pronounced. (The "President" is just an idiot, so I wouldn't even listen to how he pronounces anything)

The "regionalism" answer is right - to a point.

What it really boils down to is that people don't know how to pronounce things properly and when it become "accepted" even when after someone learnt to say it correctly, people just ignore these or brush them aside or even are "made fun of" the people who try to say it right because the majority are scared of being branded "different" (even if they know it is wrong)

Because most americans likely dont give a RATTSASS about how to say the name just as long as that black gold keeps flowing this way. Should it stop the name would likely be removed completely from the map with one properly placed thermo-nuclear device of diplomacy. See....democracy does work!! GO TEAM!!!!

its called regionalism. or an accent. lighten up..theres alot more serious problems in the world than this. for example in ohio there is a town called russia and pronounced ru sh eeee. there is also one called versailles pronounced ver sales. i think you get my point...it aint worth it. sorry but you dont get my vote on this one...regionalism or cultural differences are part of what makes this country great.

Its the same thing as how do you pronounce "tomato" or "potato." It is simply something different in our accent - not much more to that.

Good Luck!!!
