Mostly because the "Heidi Game" where the JETS fans missed out on the end of the game. Blame it on the switchboards being flooded in New York. Yeah it was a bad day for New York. They couldn't get through to tell the NBC Station in New York to keep the game on. Out in Oakland and other places though got to watch the rest of teh game. So because the way things happened to New York an agreement was made with the TV networks and the NFL that they are now contractually required to show the COMPLETE GAME in home markets. That is why they also will cut off the end of a game if the "home" team is playing a road game. If you are in the secondary market of a team you know what I am talking about. The Networks and NFL have made this agreement though. No other sport has the power of the NFL really, which is in part because the short season of the NFL. All the games really count in a sense. People call about ALL the games instead of the last 1/3rds or so. As to teh other sports Baseball only gets on network TV for the playoffs. The fact that the networks get the NFL is also part of why the NFL gets special rights. Look at the networks getting money from sports and this is teh only sport they get all to themselves basically. Come on the Networks even split Confrences.

They also don't want a repeat of the "Heidi Bowl." This occurred during a 1968 game between the Raiders and Jets. The Jets led by three points with under a minute to play, but NBC cut away to air a made-for-TV premiere of "Heidi." The Raiders scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win the game, a fact that viewers were unaware of until a message came across the telecast announcing the final score. This, of course, was before the days of ESPN, sports talk radio, etc.

Any sport in America can. Football just has more stoppages and more challenges then any other sport. Just look at baseball. If they go into extra innings they don't just cut of and go to the program that's suppose to be on air. You can also look at hockey in the playoffs when overtime periods keep going on. They will never cut short until the game is over unless the president comes on and that goes on almost every channel.

because football games, BY FAR, are the most watched television programs. The broadcast companies can command top dollar for a 30-second advertising spot during a football game.
It's all about the money.

Because more people will watch sports than regular shows. People like to see awsome plays or people getting jacked up.
