Apart from checking, Whether the Microphone is correctly inserted into the Microphone Jack, there can also be a few more things bcoz of which it might feel like your microphone is not working. If you are using the microphone in an IM or recording something, then check the volume control by double clicking on the 'volume' icon in the Task bar. In the volume controls window, check the volume of your Microphone and make sure that its not 0% ( or even muted).

the same thing happened to me... Did u go to CONTROL PANEL then SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES...and click on the tab VOICE and then TEST HARDWARE ???
but my mic is Inbuilt in my monitor..It turned out my jack crapped itself.....luckily i had another jack at the front of the pc and just bought a new micas the cord was too short to reach. The other thought is if you double click the volume on the start menu and the microphone has an ADVANCED button then untick MIC2 SELECT.

Double check to insure you plugged it into the microphone jack on your computer and not the headphone/line out jack

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
