African spotted wild cats could be the common ancestor to both lions and domestic cats.
So the African domestic cats must be the closest to lion.
You can observe spots or rosettes on lion cubs similar to those of leopards but covered by yellow fur as they grow.Hence lions could very well be cross breed between cat and fox or wolf.

Domestic house cats are Felis sylvestris catus. That is genus, species, and subspecies. Lions are Pathera leo. They are in a different genus but same family, Felidae. It goes domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and then species. The more of these they share in common the closer the two animals are related.

All moggies are decended from a cat that's native to the North African deserts. It's about the size of a Bobcat. I guess they're all equally related.
