The provider is Virgin. Credit limit is £105. which was reached in approx. 10 days. As far as I can make out, the main numbers she used were as follows, 700048001 and 700046023, at £3.50 and £4.50. per minute respectively. How can I put a STOP to these 'rip off' merchants. ? I have taken the phone away from my Grandaughter, of course, after this 'shock' to my bank account. ( I am a pensioner. ) The tariff I have with Virgin, is 300 texts and 300 minutes, monthly for direct debit of £10. ( Credit limit of £100) Apparently the numbers my grandaughter sent texts to and recieved are not included in the above agreement. And it appears they are charged directly. I don't really understand it all. HELP !

Ok this is a very common problem and im afraid legal, your daughter at some point has signed her self up for a subcription service either by texting a short code for a game or ringtone etc or downloaded one.
If the message doesnt give you the details to stop it you can try texting back STOP in capital letters to the short code if you have it they are a 5 digit number i.e 88888
If you havnt please contact Virgin who should be able to give the short code to you so you can text stop back to it or give you a contact number for the company so you can rignt them and get it stopped that way
It wont be possible for these to be blocked i dont think i know it isnt possible on my network, all that can be done is to block all incomming texts.
The charges will be passed to Virgin to be put on the bill by the company so it is a third party. When you get into contact with the company they should be able to tell you how your Granddaughter signed up for them its most likely by accident and alot put you into a subscription service so you will get texts every week for example. Im surprised Virgin never gave you this advice when you contacted them.
ICTIS will be no use to you at this point only if the company has acted illegally.
As a last resort you may have the name of the company from the text messages your could search for them on the net to see if you can find a contact that way but im sure Virgin should be able to help

She probably sent text messages or made calls long distance. Which I would assume is not included in your agreement. Just call Virgin and have them block those calls and long distance text messages and that should be it. I guess you had local service set on your plan then. That is probably why the minute rates were so high! and never ever trust you grandaughter with your cell phone again!
She can send texts to people for free using yahoo instant messenger, aol instant messenger, and other things! even e-mail!

Youre grandaughter knew what she was doing. She also knew the cost of what she was doing. Make her pay the money back to you. She will not learn her lesson if you don't and will probably do it again if she gets the chance. It is not very nice to do this to a pensioner.

best place to go is http://www.icstis.org.uk/ the premium rate regulator. Also get your grandaughter to look at http://www.phonebrain.org.uk/ (site from icstis aimed at kids)
But the best people to speak to are virgin, ask for a premium number bar, and a premium sms bar.
if theres any text messages coming in from more of these companies, reply with the word "STOP" (in capitals) and it has to stop.

Restrict the numbers via the hand set (settings) or phone the service provider and block them.
Then i'd be having a word with my kid to see why their daughter was blagging on my phone; and requesting a refund.
* Either that or make it a red slipper/bottom day.

Call your phone service provider and have them block all out going long distance calls, unless the caller gives a password.
