here's the thing. I'm moving out the end of this month to a 2 bedroom suite I'm renting and I told my friend he could move in with me if he wants. shouldnt have done that, cause I actually really really dont want to live with him and now I'm stuck in this hole.
I cant just say "actually sorry I dont wanna live with you". so should I asked the landlord to play along and instead of me telling him, I'd ask the landlord to say something like "we only rent to 1 person"...

You should be honest and tell him you really don't want to ruin the friendship you both have and thought about it, you just don't think it will work out. The landlord can't lie about it. It is better to be honest about it than start harboring bad feelings.
Usually when friends live with each other, they don't stay friends that long after that. You can tell him that. But, if you mean this month, which is 2 days away, you really can't back out now, that would be cruel. If it was January, it would be ok. If it is 2 days away, you have to stick with your end of the bargain. Make sure he signs the lease too. If things go wrong, make sure you can pay the rent on your own and you can kick him out. Well honest is something that Is the easiest to not forget, so later in the future if he asks why he can't move in you do not have to try and remember. Just tell him that, You do not want to hurt him, you just need to spend more time on your self, and getting your life on the track you want it to be on, and that it will be best if you live alone. and if he gets mad, then that is not your problem because you let him down easy

Tell him the truth. Its the best thing you can do. Atleast he would know how you feel and not be sad/angry when he found out you lied to him. It may be difficult to tell him but you would feel good that you have told the truth. Its much better than feeling guilty about lying, which you may have to admit later on!

Take your own advise and Lie Lie Lie. Sorry man but you got yourself in this mess and going to him and being honest is going to cause pain that you set him up for.
