Despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in the UK, and that the majority of prostitutes do the job to fund their illegal drug habbits, is it the men who pay to use the prostitute's services who should be punished?

Well I think there should be a crack down on Drug dealers. women want crack, men want sex ~ Who do you blame? I think the drug lords should be cleared off first.

Prostitution is also illegal in the US, but as in the UK it is a commodity that is widely used. Personally I believe that prostitution should be legalized to protect the women that are providing a service. No matter how we look at it whether the act of prostitution is out in the open with street walkers, or with that unskilled mother who is convinced this is the only way she can feed her family. There will always be individuals to employ and/or utilize such services. Legalization would also provide the necessary protection these women require, let the government be the biggest pimp, but lets not loose sight of the other types of prostitution (because there are many). Also along with legalization there would come the acceptance that many refuse to acknowledge. Prostitution is what, the oldest occupation and maybe with legalization we can get rid of some of the perverts that run the streets snatching up innocent children. Yes while some fund their drug habit, some are too, working their way through school, supporting a child or children or even in some instances whole families. Prostitutes are people too, like lawyers, nurses, doctors, retail clerks (another form of prostitution), etc., and yes, they are mothers, sisters and daughters (fathers, brothers and sons) and should be afford the same as other essential personnel. A man is a man and will always be a man, can't get it free, let him pay for it, because he will get it one way or the other and believe it or not male prostitutes make up a large number of that "trade".

I don't understand a system where a person is volunteering a service and another person is paying money for that service, there is any punishment. If I were a dairy farmer and I provide milk, and you want milk and buy it, is a crime being committed? Just because a penis and vagina are involved and we are brainwashed by the religious right to not do this, it is a crime?!?! As with most issues like this such as abortion, legality and control provides a tax base, health requirements and safety. IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NO MATTER WHAT. So why not make it legal and bring in some money and make the ladies safe?

In America both are illegal. Prostituting AND buying sex. It's a double standard for one to be illegal and not the other. What, afraid of being arrested now?(lol)...Really, I just can't see anyone being upset that buying sex would be made illegal if prostitution is already illegal. The men are just as guilty, why should they get off scott free? Fair is fair.

I think it's both. These women should be in counseling because most likely these prostitutes were sexually assualted by male family members in their past which is why they do it now or that they are or were in an abusive relationship in which they were told repeatedly that they were nothing and inferior to men because God made women that way and their being bullied so that's what they think and that's why they do it. I also think the men who pay to use prostitutes for their services if you will ought to be also thrown in jail.

Nobody should be punished. Prostitution should be legal and prostitutes should have the same rights like other workers.

If prostitution is an illegal activity, then both should pay. Equally.

On reading (Intel_knight)'s answer let me amend: Pimps should do a lot of hard time since you guys won't kill them.

Prostitution should be controlled and regulated, like any other business, that way it doesn't get out of control (by us completely prohibiting it or completely allowing it)
