I would spend one day alternating and then completely switch. My twins did the best on the lactose free formula. It takes about a week to really start noticing a difference.

What kind of formula are you using, and what kind are you thinking of switching to? If you're switching from one brand of milk-based iron fortified formula to another, you can probably switch without asking the doctor's advice. Otherwise, you might want to ask the doctor. Another good thing about asking the doctor is that sometimes they have samples they can give you, so that you can try a formula and see how your baby does without buying a whole can.

I don't give my daughter formula, but I have been told that babies on formula tend to have constipation.

The best way to minimise it is when mixing the formula, put more water than what they recommend. The increased water intake will make it easier for your baby to go.

Or else just give an extra bottle of water a day.

You could also just try different formulas and see which one suits your baby more.

Also, give smaller amounts of formula, just frequently. This gives the baby's tummy time to digest.

How long has it been happening....since birth? Anything else going on? Formula w/iron can cause constipation.

ETA: It was mentioned below to use/dilute with water. If you chose to, use caution b/c of the risk of water intoxication.
