Ask me!!
Loney planet is best..But do not believe everything they write..also be carefull or you end up on the biggest tourist (or should I say lonely planet trial)in india..a big mistake!
I always go to places not in the lonely planet!
I would higly recommend to do a bit of everything,do some lonely planet spots!
And very interesting .;ask in the embassy or go in dehli or bombay to the tourist houses of the states you want to visit! They will give you tons of free info(even cd-roms..this was in arunachal pradesh!)
And the indian tourist offices have sometimes the best info about festivals and so on..I have travelled1X 1 year in india and6X 6 months last time was 10 months ago .;I visited awesome fallut(darjeeling trek!)sikkim, bhutan(Only 20 us visa!)nagaland(last headhunters!)orissa a very weird coastal place
The tree of bhudda very nice!
Varanasi .;for meditations of course..and mostly I crawl around the himalayas in india!
Wich are beautifull beyond words!
I can give you so many tips..if you tell me what you want!
Oh dont go to to many places ..better a few ,there is so much to see and learn in beautifull and dangerous mother india..I love it like no other country on earth..pure magic!please check out my questions! ok .;hey good luck and be carefull very carefull!

I brought both Lonely Planet and The Rough Guide. I found that they did not overlap that much, and by having both, I had a wider range of information than if I carried only one book. The Rough Guide has more low-end hotels and eateries listed, and surprisingly they often list different sets of attractions for the listed cities. If you can handle the weight of these two fat books, it's worth it.
