Singers used to be both talented and pretty. Dorothy Dandridge, Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Lena Horne etc. Even today people who are both beautiful and talented exist so why don't you hear such people in the top 20 anymore instead of no-talent messes like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan? Yet Zooey Deschanel's voice is beautiful and perfect and she doesn't even have a record deal! WTF?

The majority of P. Hilton and L. Lohan's fans are, sadly, real young...I mean as young as five. There's now the "tween" group (8-12 years old) that marketers just go ga-ga over b/c they are big spenders (ie., buying more sophisticated, expensive things like celebrity perfumes). These are at a stage where they are easily influenced and are still young enough to soak things in yet w/o the ability to filter the good from the bad examples.

I know that this isn't exactly what you were looking for, but I guess my answer is that not all who appreciate music are very discriminating (their tastes aren't "mature" yet). As I write this I'm listening to Ella Fitzgerald...talk about TALENT!

Also, those in the industry are not exclusively looking for talent, but also APPEAL, whether it be sexual or of another nature. There has to be that likability (although, I personally don't see the fascination w/ those like Spears, Hilton, Lohan...) factor.
