Run the internet connection wizard in accessories, communications, select connect thru lan.

Two things:

1. if it's a cable modem (NTL, Telewest) at the other end of the router then you will find they are very, very fussy about the order that things get switched on. Turn everything off. Then switch the modem on. Let it settle - watch the nice light show - then the router. Let that settle. Then your computer.

2. The router itself is usually what controls the internet connection, not your PC. Log in to that - the instruction manual will tell you how. If not sure, open a web browser and type "http://192.168.0.1" into the address box. You may need a username and password; try "admin" for the user and "admin", "password" or "[blank]" for the pass.
