G'day,

I am attaching a link from a university website in Melbourne to give an estimate about living cost in Melbourne. I am fully aware that you are not coming as a student, but after taking the student stuff out (such as boarding residential and books expenses), you will get a pretty good estimate on the living costs, since the information has been compiled and updated yearly for the sake of the parents who wants to send their children to Melbourne.

It is also true that the living expenses in Sydney will be higher than Melbourne. I am attaching another link from a university in Sydney as a comparison.

Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome to Melbourne, if you decide to come to Melbourne. I am attaching a third link, my answer to a question about what's in Melbourne.

First of all, the cost of living is cheaper in Melbourne than Sydney. So if finances are a problem, Melbourne is the better option.

At a guess, for Melbourne, $1500 to $2000 a month should do well. That's a 1br rental apartment, public transport, bills (electricity etc), food. Entertainment - add as much as you want. You could go cheaper by living further out, riding a bike, sitting at home with the lights out and no internet or television ....

Here's a few good web sites:
www.domain.com.au - rental places
www.realestate.com.au - more rental places
www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au - public transport info
www.thatsmelbourne.com.au - general info about Melbourne

I moved from Melbourne to Sydney for a year, then returned to Melbourne. So my bias is towards Melbourne.

doing the hostel/backpacking thing i lived in australia for 3 months for under 2,000 usd (including a cheap car), that is about 2500-2700 aus$

you can find a room to rent in sydney for under 500 a month aus $ sharing space, and food is fairly cheap at the major markets in sydney and melborne.

I hope that helps

it really depends on what level of accomadation you want....but i live in melbourne....you can rent a small appartment from $150-$400 a week but most would require a 12 month lease...you can also stay in fully furnished appartments from $200 a week.....allow for food and entertainment on top of that and that will give you an indication.....
